Nurse Teach Reach - Nepal Earthquake Relief Activities
Nepal was hit by a 7.8 Magnitude earthquake on Saturday, 25th April at 11:56am. The epicentre was near the village of Lamjung, which is 77km from the Kathmandu Valley. The old-town areas of Patan and Kathmandu were the hardest hit. Currently the death toll stands at over 7000, with this number expected to rise as more remote villages are accessed and rubble cleared from destroyed buildings. Avalanches at Everest Base Camp have claimed multiple lives and many villages have yet to be contacted or surveyed for damage.
NTR supported those most affected by the disaster through a coordinated response with Local Health Authorities and local Community Partnerships. NTR helped to provide for the immediate needs of affected populations including:
Nurse Teach Reach distributed over 70 First Aid Packs to a number of individuals and local NGOs who subsequently distributed these to remote and inaccessible villages. Often, our packs were the first aid relief to reach these people and they were so grateful for our donated supplies. We also supplied smaller. local hospitals within the Kathmandu Valley as these hospitals were out of reach from the larger aid organisations, but had just as much need.
Nurse Teach Reach is continuing to support local organisations in rebuilding Nepal and in strengthening local health facililties.
