Staff compliance was also assessed. This looks at the different staff/patient contact across the unit and if hand hygiene was carried out at appropriate times e.g. before touching a patient or after a procedure. One thing that doesn’t change internationally is the compliance of consultant physicians, who scored lowest overall!
As a part of world hand hygiene day, Dr. Andrew and I carried out various scenarios using the ‘Glo Germ’, an ultraviolet light and germ simulator. We conducted various common scenarios with Nursing and Housekeeping staff to demonstrate the spread of germs across a unit or patient’s bed space.
